Nanjing occupies a ground space of 6598 square kilometers. As of the end of June 2002, the city administered 11 districts and 2 counties.

The 11 districts include Xuanwu District, Baixia District, Qinhuai District, Jianye District, Gulou District, Xiaguan District, Pukou District, Luhe District, Qixia District, Yuhuatai District and Jiangning District. The two counties are Lishui County and Gaochun County.

In these districts and counties, there are 64 subdistrict offices, 63 towns and 1 township.
