Lishui County is seen as the southern gate to Nanjing. The County has a total area of 1,067 km2 and a population of 410,000 and there are 8 towns and 1 provincial-level development zone within its jurisdiction.

The county seat of Lishui is 48 km away from the urban center of Nanjing, 17 km from Nanjing Lukou International Airport and 60 km from Xinshengwei Port, the largest river port nationwide. Nanjing-Hangzhou Expressway runs through the County and links up communications in southern and northern Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang and Shanghai. Qinhuai River and Shijiu Lake flow through via the waterway into the Yangtze River.

Lishui County enjoys a long history and boasts abundant resources in culture and tourism. It was famous for the 8 Zhongshan scenic spots in the old times and the newly developed spots include Tiansheng Bridge (praised as the "Mini Three Gorges" in southern Jiangsu), Kermes River, Forest Park at Mount Wuxiang£¬Mount DongLu, Shijiu Lake, Dongping Lake, tourism resort of Wolong Lake and Fujiabian Agricultural Science Garden for Sightseeing.

There is abundance of mineral resources in the County and the exploited minerals include 18 types like gold, silver, strontium, copper and so on. Its reserves of strontium are estimated at 180,000 tons while the reserves and quality of its strontium rank at the top in Southeast Asia.

The County enjoys noticeable industrial advantages. It turns out more than 1,000 products in 28 categories, such as machinery, electronics, chemistry, metallurgy, textile, building material, food, costume, light industry and etc. Traditionally, it takes machinery and automotive manufacture as the main body and its basic conditions for such manufacture are good.
Its chemistry, metallurgy, magnetic materials, paint production and cutting tools have their own features and reach a certain economic scale. Its farming vehicles, piston rings, fluorescence lights, carbonic acid strontium, metallic strontium, magnesium alloy, silk and hemp fabrics, magnetic materials and copper pipe products are sold well in the domestic market and marketed into America, Europe and Southeast Asia. Its strontium alloy accounts for 70% of the world's sale while its sale of metallic strontium series products ranks first in the world, accounting for 50% of the world's total sale and its sale of sulphonic acid accounts for 80% of the total domestic sale.
Lishui County is a major grain-producing county and its agricultural resources are unique. There are 10 production bases for blackberry, greengage, silkworm breeding, tee, Chinese chestnut, flower and plantation, vegetable, pig raising, geese and ducks, and aquatic products. The County has the largest base for organic agriculture nationwide and its products are all exported and enjoy a good reputation in the world.
The County has perfect infrastructure and has formed the traffic frame of outer rings and inner road network.

It has complete services of banking, commerce and trade, hotel, restaurant and recreation facilities. There is sufficient supply of water and electricity. The local people are simple and honest and the local social order is good.

In the foreseeable future, Lishui County will become an important component of the metropolitan ring of Nanjing, a key industrial base and a major point for industrial dispersal, and a communications pivot in the Yangtze River delta. The County has fixed its development directions: for agriculture, a number of leading enterprises will be developed on the basis of Fujiabian Agricultural Science Garden and the organic agricultural base, which integrate industry, agriculture and trade and combine production, supply and marketing in an effort to turn its resource edges into market edges; for industry, it will give top priority to developing machinery, electronics, chemistry, metallurgy, medicine, food, textile and costume and light industry by relying on its development zones, private-run economic parks and featured industrial parks in each town; for urban construction, it will vigorously promote infrastructure construction like transformation of old urban area and real estate development; and for tourism, it will develop the featured industry of leisure, tourism and vacation that centers on the landscape at the source of Qinhuai River.
