Luhe District that serves as the gateway of Nanjing north of the Yangtze River produces rare products which are the Nature's treasures and is a remarkable place that has given birth to so many outstanding people.

The total area of the district is 1485.5 square kilometers. As for its terrain, it is high in the north where hilly areas and down land are distributed and low in the south where riparian plain and low paddy fields surrounded with dikes are distributed while in the centre lie the rivey-valley plain and downland. It has a subtropic humid heat climate featuring a long frostless season, plentiful rainfall, sufficient sunshine and distinct four seasons. It has a population of 867000 and 5 residential subdistricts, 14 towns and 239 administrative villages.

The district has a land of 146633 hectares in total among which 72401 hectares are cultivated land, 1657 hectares, the land used as parks and gardens, 92504 hectares, forest land and 31914 hectares, surface of water areas. In the forests of the district there grow trees of 92 varieties belonging to 32 families, medicinal animals and plants of 487 varieties among which 115 varieties are included in the key medicinal materials of the state.

In the district, fishes of 36 varieties belonging to 15 families are produced and Longchi crucian enjoys popularity at home and abroad.
The district is rich in mineral resources Over 20 minerals including iron, copper, sapphire, Yuhua agate, marble, mica, granite, limestone, dibase, allapulgite clay, mineral water have been verified. Among them more than 10 varieties are worth industrial mining.

The industrial system of Luhe is complete in range. So far the petrochemical, electromachanic, textile and building material industries have become the key industries of a certain scale in the locality. Actually a group of extralarge enterprises of China such as the BASF-Yangzi IPS, Yangzi Petrochemical Corporation, Nanjing Iron and Steel Group, Nanjing Chemical Industry Corporation and Huaneng Electric Power Corporation are situated in this district.

The district boasts of perfect infrastructure. The Nanjing-Nantong, Nanjing-Lianyungang Expreeways and the Connecting Line of Nanjing No.2 Yangtze River Bridge meet there. The West-East China natural gas transfer pipeline, Nanjing-Qidong Railway and Nanjing-Huai'an Expressway under construction will go through it. Thus we can say that a new traffic and transportation pattern of having a network with crisscross roads extending in all directions and featuring great convenience and swiftness has taken shape.
