Qixia District is located at the east north of Nanjing. It has an area of 379 km2 and a population of nearly 400,000. Xixia Mountain, named as "the most beautiful mountain in Nanjing", is in the district, so the district is called "Xixia".

The District serves as an important communication pivot of Nanjing. Within its jurisdiction, there are a total of 70 ports and harbors of different types, including Nanjing Xinshengwei Port and Nanjing Longtan Deepwater Harbor. Highways extend in all directions and radiate to all parts of Jiangsu Province and the entire Eastern China. The Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway, No. 312 State Highway and No. 2 Yangtze River Bridge of Nanjing pass through the District.

The District is a major area with concentrated modern industry in Nanjing and has formed four pillar industries, such as medicine and electronics, machine manufacture, new building materials and petrochemistry.

The District boasts a concentration of scientific talents for there are more than 30 universities, colleges and research institutes within it and the University City of Xianlin is under construction. The District has numerous talents of different types and a strong strength in research and development.

The District has a solid foundation in agriculture and is an important base of farm and sideline products. The three dominating industries of "vegetable, milk and flower" have made progress on a considerable scale.

The District is well known as the eastern suburban scenic area of Nanjing and remarkable for its beautiful environment, scenic landscape and rich resource of tourism. There are historic sites and scenic spots here and there in the District and the number of state- and provincial-level preservation sites of cultural relics amounts to 38. Currently, the Qixia Guangting project of urban parlor is launched, whose design and construction are reliant on the Qixia Scenic Spot.

Baguazhou Islet is the third largest island in the Yangtze River and is renowned as the "golden shoal in the Yangtze River", where the ecological environment is excellent and pleasing.

In recent years, in the process of development in areas along Yangtze River, the district will stick to the development strategy of "depending on joint development of state-level Nanjing Economic and Technologic Development Zone and Xianling University City", to achieve the new leap of economic and social development.
