Jiangning Economic Development Zone was founded on June 18, 1992, with a population of 210,000 and a total planning area of 317 km2, of which 70 km2 have been developed.
Jiangning Economic Development Zone is situated in the south of Nanjing.

As the Zone is only 7 km from the urban center of Nanjing, 20 km from Xinshengwei Port, the largest river port in China, and 7.5 km from Nanjing Lukou International Airport, it enjoys very convenient water, land and air communications and is one of the core areas selected for expansion of the main city of Nanjing.

The functions of Jiangning Economic Development Zone under the overall planning are determined as: a new urban district of Nanjing with distinctive feature of internationalization, modernization and desirable ecology; an economic park with high and new technology industries, high-tech enterprises and high-tech talents as its kingpin; an enterprise park gets compatible with internationally accepted practices and modern market economy; an ecological park ideal for suburban tourism and leisure and remarkable for harmony and coexistence of man and nature; and a cultural park with excellent and clean living environment, a strong culture flavor and thriving vitality.
Jiangning Economic Development Zone persistently sticks to its development strategy with a high starting point and high standards and has invested a cumulative total of over RMB 4 billion in infrastructure.

So far, a number of rather perfect supporting facilities and complete community service facilities have been completed one after another. In the 70 km2 of developed area, the so-called "nine opens" and "one leveling" have been completed, that is, roads, electricity, post service, tap water, drainage of rainwater, drainage of sewage, gas, steam gas and wideband telecommunications are open for use or service and leveling of ground is completed. Meanwhile we will, based on existing conditions, implement effective strategies step by step with regard to information, supporting facilities, logistics, financing, talent, market development, business accounting and human relations so as to build a new platform for industrial development.

The five service centers of education, residence, commerce and trade, entertainment and medical care have basically come into being. In addition, the Zone has competent organizations in charge of community management, public security, traffic control, firefighting and environmental protection, management of urban appearance, and intermediary service. The Zone has built 12 squares or parks with their own features as well as 36 greenbelts along the roads. The green space accounts for more than 40% of the total area of the Zone. In June 2001, the Zone passed the ISO14000 international environment management system certification.

By pursuing its objectives of providing convenient, thoughtful, faithful and efficient service and becoming compatible with internationally accepted practices and market economy, Jiangning Economic Development Zone has set up a "one-stop" administrative service center which is responsible for handling all procedures from establishing a project to obtaining a business license, to starting construction and to putting into commercial operation.

Led by a number of famous foreign and domestic corporations and enterprises, the Zone has formed five major pillar industries with science and technology as the leading factor, including electronics, automobile and automobile components, new education and scientific research, food processing, and new building materials.

In the near future, Jiangning Economic Development Zone will principally develop the IT industry and automobile manufacture, achieve coordinate development of the secondary and tertiary industries, realize social progress and civilization, and develop into a high-tech garden city of Nanjing as well as a knowledge innovation base of Jiangsu remarkable for beautiful environment and first-rate infrastructure facilities and service facilities.
