May 8th, 2005 was the commemoration day of the 60th anniversary of victory in
Anti-fascist War. Leaders and people from dozens of counties were invited to
Moscow to attend the commemoration. Germany, the adversary in the past, has long
been the honored guest. With a history of 60 years, this commemoration is more
like a gathering of all Europeans. This gathering was virtually a kind of flaunt
as compared with those countries entangled in enmities and war chaos out of
Europe. Since May 8th, 1945, Europe has been enjoying peace for 60 years.
"The cruelty of recollection is that it can awake some forgotten
memories." Wars broke out on this civilized land with so much cost while the
period of peace was much shorter than the period of war. Therefore, neither the
winner nor the loser can bear responsibility for all serious consequences
arising from recollection of history.
Besides the Allies commemorating
their victory, the self-examination of the war maker in those years is peculiar
in the history. The self-examination of the war paved the way to Moscow and
Normandy, as well as won the respect again.
Satirically, when Europeans
celebrate their new lives, how many people can still remember that 2005 is also
the 60th anniversary of the victory in Chinese Anti-Japanese War? When Germans
confessed and apologized for their crimes, what did Japanese do? Praying at the
Yasukuni Shrine, historiography, beautifying their history of aggression, they
even try in vain to deny Nanjing Massacre of 300,000 Chinese in cold blood.
Under the ironclad evidences of history, the Rightists of Japan still want to
obliterate this history filled with tears and blood. It is more terrible than
forgetfulness.
Tragically, this part of history is becoming more and more
weakened in our minds along with the passage of time. So, we have set this
special topic. 60 years has passed away, maybe the joy of victory in those years
has become dimmer and dimmer, but the bitter lesson in 1937 cannot be forgotten.
Nanjing, as one of the most convincing witnesses to that war, takes on heavy
responsibilities of maintaining peace of the world. |
