On 16 December 1937, Japanese troops forced millions of unarmed soldiers and civilians into the yard of the original land army prison, till evening the victims were sent to Jiangdongmen under escort, and the homes of many civilians were torched, then mow the crowd by light or heavy machine-gun suddenly. The tragic people cried mournfully and tumble in the pool of blood. The scattered remains were in disorder and stuffed the road, spreading to the surface of the eastern Changjiang River and being exposed in the wind and sun. For several months, extremely no cruel ashes rested in peace. Due to the warmer weather, the debris corrupted. So Nanjing charity collected over one million bodies and buried them in the nearby two earth hole which is called  "wan ren keng"(pit of ten thousand corpses).
