In December 1937, at the beginning of fall of Nanjing city, the refugees like
tidewater flooded to escape including thirty thousand unarmed soldiers and
twenty thousand civilians, and gathered on the beach of Yanziji in order to
cross the river in the north. Unfortunately, they were closed off by the
Japanese warship, then were surrounded by a large body of Japanese armies
following the sweeping by machine-gun. All of them were massacred accounting to
over fifty thousand.

This gravestone is located in the Yanziji Park near the Yangtze
