Video camera, which was used to shoot city massacre proof of Japanese
invaders in Nanjing by American priest John Magee 60 years ago, was donated to
Nanjing Memorial Hall of Compatriots Murdered in the Nanjing Massacre by his son
David Magee on October 3, 2002.
Curator Zhu Chengshan introduced at the donation ceremony that priest John
Magee did missionary work in Nanjing from 1912 to 1940. During Nanjing massacre
by Japanese invaders, he and Rabe founded Nanjing Safety International Committee
and set up refugee hospital, saved and helped over 200 thousand Chinese army and
people who faced slaughter. He also risked his life to secretly shoot the
sanguinary atrocity of Japanese invaders in Nanjing massacre with a 16
millimeters video camera.
Zhu Chengshan said that this filmstrip was 105 minutes. It is the only active
picture that reflects the historical fact of Nanjing massacre. Among these, 10
pictures were published in American "Life" magazine issued in May 1938 and
shocked the world public opinions. In 1946, John Magee brought his own newsreel
to bear witness to Nanjing massacre in Far East International Court-martial.
David Magee is retired vice-president of American Morgan Bank. He said: "at
that time, a news institution paid 10 thousand USD buying the newsreel of
atrocity by Japanese invaders shot by my father. But my father refused. He said
that he didn't save money to shoot this film, but leave behind atrocity by
Japanese invaders and make Nanjing massacre public."
David Magee is the eldest son. After John Magee died in 1953, he inherited
his father's video camera and historical film, as well as his father's
unfulfilled wish. In order to make the world know the fact of Nanjing massacre,
he gave lectures in America and Canada, introduced historical facts of Nanjing
massacre, offered his father's diary, letters and other historical materials for
some writers, artists and historians and revealed atrocity of Japanese invaders.
At the donation ceremony, survivals Li Xiuying and Xia Shuqin in Nanjing
massacre met with David Magee and his wife Francis Magee.
