A reporter learned that during the "11th Five-year Plan", Jiangsu will invest 10 billion RMB in reconstructing Jiangsu part of Beijing-Hangzhou Grant Canal and build it into the water highway during the "11th Five-year Plan".

Canal to become the "water highway"

According to the introduction, Jiangsu part of Beijing-Hangzhou Grant Canal is 683 kilometers long. It is the golden water route with the highest value of Beijing-Hangzhou Grant Canal. Beijing-Hangzhou Grant Canal is divided into Northern Jiangsu Canal and Southern Jiangsu Canal. Northern Jiangsu Canal is the golden water route carrying cold from the north to the south and Southern Jiangsu Canal is the main route of architectural materials, and production materials.

8.5 billion RMB invested in reconstructing Southern Jiangsu Canal

Because of demands of economic development, the Canal is carried out the route-changing project. 3 billion RMB invested in building a 26-kilometer-long new canal. The project will be constructed and put into use next year. There are 11 bridges on the route-changing canal, like a "modern bridge museum". The investment volume of reconstruction of Southern Jiangsu Canal will reach 8.5 billion RMB.

Container ships can be sailed on canal in the future

At present, 25-kilometer-long water route from Huaiyin to Huai'an ship lock is under renovation. At the same time, water plants with an area of 7000 square meters are planted. According to the introduction, container ships will be sailed on the canal in the future.
