In the morning on Feb.4th, at the gate of Nanjing Jingli Hotel, a grey-haired old lady reluctantly bided farewell to Ding Yitao, president of Gulou Hospital. This old lady is Ms. Hancock, the granddaughter of Doctor Marlin, the first president of Gulou Hospital.

"Nanjing is my home. I'm loath to part with you", said Ms. Hancock with tears. "You are our grandmother. We are waiting for you here all the time", Ding Yitao said sincerely.

On Jan.23rd, invited by Gulou Hospital, Ms. Hancock came to Nanjing from Canada and attended the opening ceremony of the Memorial Hall of Gulou Hospital.

During these over ten days that Ms. Hancock staying in Nanjing, she always looked over Nanjing, the city mentioned by her father and grandfather, from the 11th floor of the hotel. "Maybe my mother once worked at that kindergarten", she pointed at Gulou Kindergarten on the opposite side of the street. This is an old kindergarten established in 1923. Sometimes, these old buildings could evoke the memory for deceased relaters of Ms. Hancock.

In 1892, Doctor Marlin from Canada set up a Christ Hospital in Nanjing and worked there for over 30 years. "My grandfather had six children. My mother was born in Nanjing, married and had her own babies in Nanjing. When my mother left Nanjing, she was 28 years old." Ms. Hancock said in her childhood, her father and mother always talked about Nanjing. "My mother could make very delicious Chinese foods. My grandfather lived with us in his old age, so we have been keeping his old photos and materials."

"All offspring of my grandfather have special emotion with Nanjing. In 2002, my elder brother worked in Shanghai and tried his best to communicate with Gulou Hospital. So in that year, I visited Nanjing for the first time and attended the activity of celebrating the 110th anniversary of Gulou Hospital. Several years ago, one of my uncles who born in Nanjing was dead. According to his last wish, we strewed his bone ash into the Yangtze River", said Ms. Hancock.

As Ms. Hancock told to the reporter, they all feel proud of their grandfather. In Canada, when she met with Chinese, she always asked whether they know Gulou Hospital and Marlin. "But what's a pity. Many Chinese people know Bethune, buy few knows my grandfather."

As introduced by Ding Yitao, this memorial hall is the first one set up by the hospital in China. "When I see these old pictures of Marlin, when I see him kneeling on the ground and saving Chinese patients, I'm deep moved. One century passed, but his spirit will be kept in our heart forever and encourage us to save more patients."

"Patients love the doctor who loves patients", said Ding, "I know a good doctor not only needs excellent skills, but also must love all patients. We set up this memorial hall and spread the spirit of Marlin, in order to spread this love. I hope that all young doctor could know how to be a good doctor."
