They are charmed by Chinese culture
www.odtn.com 2007-11-2 17:16:03

The other day, an exciting Chinese-Speaking Match was held in Nanjing. Many foreign students in Nanjing took part in this match. Some of them told the story of daily life in Nanjing, some of them performed comic dialogues and others brought about wonderful shorts and two-man comic shows. Besides applauding fluent Chinese of these foreigners, the reporter also learnt many stories about their Chinese studying as well as their interests and love to Chinese culture.

Chen Huizhang: Monkey King brings me to China (Viet Nam)

If you meet with Chen on the street, maybe you cannot find out that he is a foreigner. Because this young Viet Nam fellow looks like a Chinese young man very much. Though he has learnt Chinese for only eight months, he can speak Chinese fluently. But he is a little shy.

"When I was a little child, I and my family lived at a small village. At that time, my family was very poor. The whole village had just a few televisions. At that time, the TV drama 'Journey to the West' was on show. Not only children but also adults were attracted by this interesting TV drama. I always thought that how China is? Why did such interesting stories happen there? I hoped I could come to China at once", said Chen.

It is a big surprise that my dream came true. One day last year, my teacher told me that I could go to China and study with the scholarship. At that moment, I was extremely excited. Because I knew I would have a chance to visit the hometown of Monkey King and learn Chinese which our country used 300 years ago.

When I came in Nanjing, everything is strange and fresh. At the beginning, I could understand "Hello", "Thank you" and "How much" in Chinese. I felt very happy.

Ma Teng: I grow a beard because I like Zhuang Zi (USA)

Ma Teng and Long Pan (Chinese names of two American young guys) performed a short at the match. Ma Teng said he is good at talking, but Long Pan likes thinking. At the beginning, many friends of Ma Teng said learning Chinese is very difficult, so he wanted to challenge himself. Beyond his expectation, I began to like Chinese from then on. He likes such two books as "A Madman's Diary" and "The Life Style of Q" of Lu Xun, a very famous cultural leader in modern China very much. "I also like books of ghosts and monsters, such as 'Strange Tales from Make-Do Studio'", said Ma with a smile. At present, two magazines "Youth Abstracts" and "Readers" are his favorites. He also likes Lao Zi and Zhuang Zi, two famous thinkers in ancient China. He pointed at his new beard and said: "In the past, I never grew a beard. But after I charmed by Zhuang Zi, I grow." His humor and sincere attracted everyone.

Kong Zhen: I hope to be a fashion reporter in China

Kong Zhen is a beautiful and smart girl with golden hair from Rumania. When she was a university student in Bucharest, she was major in French and Chinese language. She got scholarships for studying abroad both to France and China, but she chose to come in China. "In my mind, China is very mysterious. So I chose China." She studied both in Nanjing Normal University and Xiaozhuang Normal University. Last year, she graduated from Xiaozhuang Normal University. After the graduation, many friends of her went back to their homeland, but she chose to work in Nanjing. She once wrote column for a newspaper and acted as a hostess at No.18 Channel.

She has many Chinese friends in Nanjing, so she is loath to part with them and with Nanjing. She hopes she can be a reporter and editor at a fashion magazine, but she knows it is very difficult. Though she can speak Spanish, French and Chinese, it is still hard to find her favorite job.
