On January 1, 2008, Nanjing residents welcomed New Year of 2008 with various manners. Because 2008 is the Olympic Year, manners of welcoming New Year add many new bright spots.

Flying kites mean highflying
  
On January 1, many residents gathered in Minggugong Square and Yueya Lake Square to fly kites to welcome New Year.
  
Senior citizen Cheng Haigang with 87 years old sat in the wheel chair and she was accompanied by three grandchildren. Cheng Haigang told the reporter that her grandchildren flied a kite with her and they hoped that she would stand up in 2008.
  
Mrs. Liu and her husband as well as their son flied a kite in Minggugong Square. Mrs. Liu told the reporter that the kite flied into the sky, representing the good wishes of festival.

Hundreds of birds competing in "singing and recitation"

On January 1, residents carried hundreds of birds to gather here.

At 7:00 a.m., about 50 bird-keeping fans gathered in the square. Mr. Cao carrying over 10 wood thrushes said: "bird-keeping fans that live in Nanhu and Jiqingmen areas gather here to play birds. We held a 'birds singing to welcome New Year' activity."

Doing volunteer service to show love in Welfare House
  
On the first day of New Year, many youths looked in children and cared for senior citizens and did volunteer service to show love in Welfare House.
  
In the morning, over 30 volunteers came to Social Welfare House in Pukou to celebrate New Year with children. Volunteers are divided into five teams. Some teach handwork, some decorate wall, some teach knowledge. It is reported that the team has over 500 volunteers.

The reporter learned from some senior citizens' apartments that many volunteers came to help them. Volunteers held senior citizens clean rooms and hang lanterns. A volunteer said: "Dong volunteer service has become my life custom. I feel happy when I help people."
